The Enceladus project is designed to effectively replace the dramatic loss of planet-cooling albedo in the Arctic caused by sea ice melt during the past forty-five years.

 

Albedo Replacement

The objective of the project is to cultivate approximately 3.8 million km² of white silica snowfields in the deserts of North Africa to compensate for the loss of 5 million km² of reflective sea ice in the Arctic.

White Silica Sand

By using white silica sand in a patented process, it’s estimated that sufficient silica snowfields can generate enough new albedo to cool the planet by up to 0.91°C, with approximately half of this decrease occurring within the first twenty years of completion.

A Global Insurance Policy

The project is a global insurance policy to reduce global warming over the next fifty years. By using natural white silica sand, we can ensure the world has sufficient time to fully convert to clean, green energy resources while avoiding the worst consequences of global warming, whether it reaches +2.0° or +2.5° above the preindustrial average in the coming decades.

 
 

What the Enceladus Project is Not

The Enceladus Project is NOT a geoengineering initiative. Rather, it is consistent with the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) because it does NOT interfere with the transmission of solar radiation—a technique advocated by geoengineering projects that propose using aerosols to cool the planet, for instance. The CBD currently bans the use of aerosols to cool the planet.
